Imagine horror novelist-turned-film producer Lia Scott Price’s surprise when she found her production company, Lia Scott Price Productions Inc., listed on the production company credits for the Kevin Costner/Ashton Kutcher film ‘The Guardian’ (2006). “I was flattered at first, but then I decided I had to set the record straight.” says Price, whose fans alerted her to the credit mixup listed on online movie sites. The correct film belonging to Price is also called ‘The Guardian’ (2005), © 2001, filmed in 2005, and released in September 2006 on DVD on customflix.com (http://www.customflix.com/212860) by DarkAngel Distributors. The film is listed as ‘The Guardian’ (2005) on IMDB.com. Price’s ‘The Guardian’ (http://www.liascottprice.com/films.htm) is a horror flick based on Price’s horror/sci-fi novel ‘The Guardian’ (http://www.iuniverse.com/bookstore/book_detail.asp?isbn=0-595-22865-8 ) which features her creation, a Serial Killer Guardian Angel™ targeting people who pray for help. “There were also press announcements prior to my film’s release.” Price says. Price contacted the correct producers for the Costner/Kutcher Guardian film to alert them to the credit snafus and released this statement to them: “The issue is not with the title but the fact that my production company name was being listed in the credits for a movie I didn’t produce. I'm sure this was an honest fluke and that things like this do happen. As flattering as it was, I felt I would lose credibility if I allowed the credit to stay for a movie that wasn’t mine. It would not be right. I certainly feel that the Costner/Kutcher Guardian film should be credited with its rightful producers.” Price had already sent prior press release disclaimers about the film title mixup. “People might say I’m using this opportunity for publicity or that I want to benefit from the other film. Although this has created some unexpected exposure, what does an independent filmmaker do when a big studio releases a film with the exact same name as my film and there’s confusion, especially for my own fan base? I’m still a businessperson and I have to promote my own film. But I’ll do it with a conscience and won’t take credit for what’s not mine.
