Q & A About Lia: From Self-Publishing to Filmmaking: How'd She Do It?
Q. Who is Lia?
A. She's a Horror Novelist and Film Producer
Q. What does she write about?
A. Serial Killer and Vampire Guardian Angels (TM). People think Guardian Angels protect them and answer their prayers and help solve problems. Lia's Angels are killers that put an end to your problems by killing you if you pray to them. Some of Lia's Angels are also Vampires, so when you pray to them, that's how they find you. Prayers are their radar.
Q. Why does she write about these characters?
A. Read her article.
Q. Where can I find Lia's books?
A. iuniverse.com, amazon.com, any Barnes and Nobles or Borders bookstore (special orders). Dark Delicacies Bookstore in Burbank CA also carries Lia's novels. Cafepress carries Lia's novel "Dominion".
Q. How long did it take Lia to write her novels?
A. It varies from 3-6 months. "The Guardian" was the only novel Lia wrote in 9 days. If Lia is co-writing with a co-author, it takes at least 3-4 months to complete a novel.
Lia's novels also started out as short scripts. Two test chapters for "The Guardian" were first written as scenes for her acting class as a way for her to test out her dialogue. For all her other novels, Lia continued to write each chapter/scene a week, and had the actors act them out until each book was completed.
Q. What's Lia's web site?
A. www.liascottprice.com
Q. What's unique about Lia?
A. She turns her own novels into films. She writes, produces, edits, writes music for, acts in, and distributes her films. She runs her own film production/marketing/publicity/distribution company. She also formed her own film distribution and record label. Lia believes in self-promotion and has a strong DIY mentality. She's self-produced, self-marketed, and self-distributed. She also stars in her own films. _Lia's quotes: "No one knows your own work better than you do. Make use of resources available to you. If you believe in your work, the rest will follow. But you have to start somewhere. Even if you work 15 minutes a day towards your goals, it's a step. Just do it." Lia's favorite saying is " 'Find a way'--- That is, find a way to achieve your goals. If one way doesn't work out, find another way. Constantly adjust and adapt. Always reinvent yourself. Stay positive and avoid negative people who try to discourage you. At least you are accomplishing something for yourself."__Just like Bruce Lee said: "Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend."__Lia says "Treat yourself as a business. You become your own publicist, marketing consultant, CEO, graphic designer, web page designer, accountant......whatever it takes. If you can't do it on your own, hire someone who can. But do something. Do your research, make a plan, and start executing the plan."___Lia has given talks at universities (UC Santa Cruz Distinguished Alumni Series), and at other events.
Q. How did she become a film producer?
A. Picked up a camera, hired a crew, actors and other professionals. She believes in utilizing local talent and finding new actors and other crew who are passionate about their craft. She also experimented with writing, filming, producing and airingher own film shorts with actor friends on a local cable TV station (Time Warner Network TCTV 28), and tested her dialogue out with actors from acting classes that she wrote sides for (Lia learned scriptwriting by writing 5-minute sides in various genres every week for 16-20 actors for an acting class in Santa Monica, CA). Then she moved on to feature filmmaking from there. Lia works within her budget and utilizes available resources and locations, but she also has trained actors in her films.
Lia's methods:
-Tested scenes and dialogue with an acting group and filmed short scenes from her novels as experimental pieces to see how they would work on film
-Formed own production company
-Hired a professional crew
-Worked with actors who had training and discipline
-Hired a professional post-production crew. Lia also began learning her own editing and the importance of owning your own equipment and keeping up with technology so one can become a self-sufficient film company.
-Did own marketing and publicity and utilized professional news media
-Utilized online distribution markets and retail outlets
-Took training in all aspects of film production: acting, directing, camera work, lighting, editing, script writing etc. (She learned camera work, lighting and editing from her film crew and from a local Cable TV station)
-Acted in own films to develop a "name"
-Ran her production company like a business with products, goals and timelines
-Always looking out for innovations and trends through online DVD on-demand production and online broadcasting, and seeking mentors who can advise her

Q. Where can I find DVDs of Lia's films?
A. www.liascottprice.com
Q. What's Lia's style of filming and editing?
A. Raw stuff. The footage that happens before the actual filming before the actors even act is often the most interesting because it's real and unrehearsed---keep the cameras rolling before "action is even yelled" and even after "cut".
Q. Is Lia "hands-on" in her shoots?
A. Lia writes, co-directs, acts in, runs camera, does set design , edits, and works on all aspects of the production from development, filming, post production, marketing, publicity, promotion, and distribution. Filmmaking to her is not only creative, it's also a business.
Q. Why are the script versions different from the actual novel?
A. Lia had to work with a budget, available locations and talent, and adapt/revise the script to fit whatever was available to her. But the concept, characters, and storyline are pretty much the same.
