How Do I Write? Presentations by Lia Scott Price Copyright Lia Scott Price
Use Real Life:
There is no real formula to writing. Its all about using fiction to vent real life issues and fears. Other than correct grammar, there's no one "correct" structure. Screw anyone who says you "have" to write a certain way or in a certain format.Writing isusing your own voice. You just have to have some passion behind something youve experienced. That something can be what you feel, or something you want to question or share with the world. Or just mess with peoples heads! There is always a reality behind every story, and fiction is a medium in which it can be told. What makes you angry? Who are you in love with? What makes you depressed? What makes you happy? What do you have a passion for? Any crisis, any experience, is a catalyst for creativity. Study real life. It's the best inspiration.
The What-If Game:
Work on a "what if" scenario. What if your co-worker was a secret serial killer? What if you woke up one day and there were absolutely no people on the planet? Except maybe Zombie penguins? MMMMMMMMMmmmmmmm.Zombie Penguins..but, you get the idea.
I've been asked what my biggest challenge is in writing and in what I do. Therer are two so far: one is dealing with and avoiding the naysayers, negative people and environments and working on not letting them affect me, and the second one is: never try to write a serious drama when I'm in a room full of gamers playing Warcraft because my dialogue often ends up like this:
"Dr. Lieberman, the victim will die soon if we don't get her that heart transplant"
"Well, what does the family say? I know they're health insurance coverage has been inadequate. I'll call a social worker in to counsel them."
"Well, the plus three staff that my wizard stole from you won't do much for my Orc army."
"You meddling warlord! I shall have the spines of your enemies!"
You get the picture.
Writing to me is a psychological look into my own thoughts, experiences, fears, beliefs, etc. If I am really afraid of something, I write it down.and make it into a story. Its a great way to face, confront, or examine your fears.if you dare! Thats why sharks are so great--they inspire so much fear. What if I went into the water? What would there be/ What could happen? You will always find a character or situation you can relate to, and that other people can relate to. Everyone has a style and a way of writing, and an emotion that influences them.
Make-Believe!: Children are great at make-believe. They ask questions, they play games, they turn the inanimate into something with life, into something with character, with names, with emotions. I think like a child would in approaching an object. Make the world your own personal playgroundwhat ifwhat ifwhat if
Writing is like a parallel universe. Anything can happen. I play a game with myself when I write. I keep asking "What if?"...what if there was something strange behind that door? What if I opened it and there was nothing there? What if I ignored it but I continue to hear strange noises? What if I had someone else open it? It's a great exercise.
Dialogue:
I've been known to test my dialogue with an acting group I used to work with. I still do that. If it flows, it's a keeper. Thats why I suggest new writers test their dialogue with people. How does you aunt talk? How does your brother talk? How do people in a mall talk? How do people at work talk? It has to sound natural. Study their actions. Are they expressive? Do they shift their feet when they talk? Do they like to wave their hands around? Do they roll their eyes? Practice conversations with people. It will help you refine dialogues and actions with your own characters. How would someone scream fi they were surprised? Frightened? Shocked? Scared? Each scream is different. Each reaction is different. Each movement is different.
Locations and Settings:
Mess around with locations. Turn them into something creepy. A closet is an ordinarty closet until someone puts a dead body in it, or a monster. Now people have a fear of dark closets. Or whats under the bed. Its all psychological because someone played make-believe and it ended up in movies and books.
